In temporary retirement, due to a huge wildfire just outside Durango.  Which, it's been said, was started by a spark from one of the steam loco's using the Durango to Silverton railroad. All services had been suspended until it was safe to use the route again.

I see great beauty in your two fine images, Frank.
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Ray, much appreciated. I'm pleased to see that you seem to be on the mend.

Poor old thing, parked in disgrace until things cooled down..
Frank L Croston.: Thats the way it looked Chris, they are not the same when not fired up.
There has even been that problem here. The Gwilli railway was unable to run steam trains....imagine, that dry in Wales!!
Frank L Croston.: Scary isn't it...They were planning on running their services here with a diesel engine temporarily.

It looks like a ghost engine Frank.
Frank L Croston.: Well if they cant find a way to make it safe to run them again it could end up that way Andrew. That would be such a shame.

Excellent workmanship on your side, again. The second picture could have been a stand-alone.
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Louis, it was intended to be, but I thought it went well with this photo.

that is an impressive locomotive, Frank. i like the cowcatcher jutting forward on this one.
Frank L Croston.: They are very impressive, Ayush. The cowcatcher is very 'American' smile
Fine looking engine isn't she, so different in design than ours. Interesting to see a shovel, I imagined big locos like this had some sort of auto coaling arrangement.
Frank L Croston.: I think so Brian, I like all the bits that seem to be added on...Not the ones I've seen, just a good ( usually young) old fireman.
damaged by a fire it started.....hmmm? Karma?
Frank L Croston.: No its not damaged, Alan, they all look like this smile
It certainly was not unknown for steam locos to cause trackside fires!
Frank L Croston.: Certainly not Tom, I don't think we ever had one as big as this one outside Durango though.

That was a problem with some of our heritage lines in the UK during the long dry spell. I reckon the wildfire was probably started from a discarded cigarette from one of the passengers rather than this superb locomotive. wink I thought that the trains were all followed by a man on a scooter with fire-fighting equipment for such an issue?
Frank L Croston.: You could be right about the cigarette, people are unbelievably careless. I'd not heard about the scooter thing Alan.
I love both of these shots, Frank! Nicely done!!
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Elizabeth, glad you do!
