photoblog image Lightning bolt !

Lightning bolt !

A few weeks ago, we spent some time photographing this storm at the Grand canyon.

There were numerous bolts of lightning, but I only managed to catch this one.

One week later, a friend of ours (in fact, she photographed our wedding), was taking wedding photos at the rim of the canyon.  She was shooting a video when the group were struck by lightning. I've seen it, and its scary! Miraculously no one was seriously hurt, though some spent time in hospital. In retrospect maybe we should not have stood around taking photos in the storm, we'll think twice next time.

Tu as bien su capturer cet éclair.
Frank L Croston.: Pure luck, Martine, I took numerous shots and only found two with bolts in them, thank you though.
This is fantastic in B&W! Great job, Frank!
Frank L Croston.: Thank you, Elizabeth.

Amazing capture. Glad you weren't in that other group. There's a limit to the risks we should take I guess.
Frank L Croston.: Some luck involved Bonnie, thank you though. Yes, so were we, we do get blasé about these things.
this is so cool to capture the lightning bolt Frank... i agree with you about standing around in the open in a thunder storm...
i got my shots from the shelter of my veranda... and i thought that i was lucky at the time....petersmile
Frank L Croston.: I was pleased to get a couple, Elizabeth got more...I was under a bush, not the brightest idea smile Thanks Peter.

Yes - that could have been you and Elizabeth! Great shot, though
Frank L Croston.: A frightening thoughtElisabeth, I've had too many electric shocks when working to get finished off by one! smile Thank you.
That IS scary, Frank. Maybe you will allow this one to be your triumph and need no more?! It's electrifying.
Frank L Croston.: The video ( no pun intended) was shocking! They were very lucky. We will be more wary next time.

A fabulous image Frank. Now you've achieved this, considering what happened to your friend, it might be a good idea not to try to do this again..
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Chris, next time it'll be the camera on a tripod set up with a lightning sensor and us in the car...smile

This is very special, Frank and also on my "bucket-list" however I might kick the bucket doing so grin...
In the spur of the moment we all do stupid things... but who thinks when there is that opportunity. I am glad that nobody was killed in the other group and over time everybody is well again. It can really shake up the body.
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Astrid, yes, its been on my b.l. for as long as I can remember, we had gone purposefully hoping to catch a storm over the canyon and we weren't disappointed.
I think everyone is ok from the group, they'll have a story to tell when they show their wedding photos.

A terrific photograph Frank, but I would be concerned at hanging around as your friends discovered. Great Doors song btw.
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Andrew. yes indeed, I think we will be a lot more cautious from now on. I really like that song, glad you did.
fabulous!!! There is a technique for getting more bolts. This one is superb!!
Frank L Croston.: Thank you Rob, much appreciated. I've read up on a few, after our friends experience I'm wary of trying again. smile

Heh, I tried to shoot lightning bolts, once. Tried all kind of techniques, like timing them, etc. What did work, was to shoot multi-frame at the time you think one will strike. I got one strike, in that way.

Another exceptional picture by yourself.
Frank L Croston.: Doing it as I was, just guessing or trying to be faster than the bolts ( !! ) doesn't really work.A lady close by me was shooting in time lapse on one camera, she had a lightning sensor on another. Another photographer I spoke to recently used 30 sec' exposures and hoped to get something, he did do by the way. Thanks Louis, always appreciated.

Photographers like to put a little bit of risk and thrill in to their life. That is just my opinion.
Frank L Croston.: I quite agree Andy, got to get THE shot! smile
It may have only been a single capture but it is very good.

I have a problem with my SC blog at the moment, apologies if I appear to be a bit aloof with replies etc., hopefully it will be sorted soon.
Frank L Croston.: Thanks Brian, hope you sort your problem.
Good capture but heed your own advise. Peter thinks he was safe. I saw a person and veranda when the veranda was hit! Lightning must be taken very seriously.
Frank L Croston.: You are right Mary, I think we will be more careful next time after seeing our friends video.
Very good Fank, I have never been this lucky.
Frank L Croston.: Thanks Michael, we didn't know we had got any 'til we saw them on the comp', I got two, Ell' got three. There was a woman set up with two cameras, tripods, lightning sensor, time lapse on one camera, I wonder how many she got?
They were showing a lightning storm in Los Vegas on the news this morning. This is an impressive picture Frank.

Lucky nobody was seriously hurt!
Frank L Croston.: We do get lots of them, it was lucky indeed. Thanks Bill.
It looks like a local storm, Frank, as you can see the sun hitting the clouds in the distance. You were very fortunate to have captured this wonderful image without incident.
Frank L Croston.: There were two storms, this one on our left and another across the canyon, both were localised we only felt a few spots of rain. Thanks Beverley, we were lucky.

That is spectacular,
Frank L Croston.: Even more so being there Anne, that storm to our left, and another across the canyon to our right ! It was like being in a giant bowling ally with disco lights smile
