photoblog image Derrick Davis

Derrick Davis

Of the Hopi and Choctaw tribes. Seven times world champion hoop dancer.

To help understand what Native American Hoop Dancing is... here is a video I think I've shown before of Mr. Davis' dance.  It's not Hula Hooping!   It's a story.  In it, he uses the hoops to depict a raven, pheasant, turkey, butterfly, eagle, alligator...   His talk at the beginning is interesting - but if you want to skip to the dancing, it starts at minute 2:51

Now come on, Frank; is this intentional camera blur or did Elizabeth jog your arm? It's fascinating to learn of the significance of the dance.
Frank L Croston.: You've found me out...Doh ! It is interesting, the guy on the drum and singing, Ryan, in the video told some very funny stories about the representation of native Americans in westerns.
The dancing is incredibly clever. Cracking picture too
Frank L Croston.: That it is Bill, thanks very much.

I am up late today, but will certainly watch later, Frank. Your image is fantastic
Frank L Croston.: Its worth seeing Elisabeth, I was concentrating so hard on taking photo's that I didn't really 'see ' his performance 'til I watched the video. I'm pleased you like the photo, thanks.
It is an amazing dance when eve what you say is understood. I am glad you got that often people think of it as playing with hula hoops. Excellent shot. I wanted to look a your shutter speed and will later on the pc. IPad has no hover function
Frank L Croston.: 1/4 sec' Mary, it was scary to try it, I kept switching to a much faster speed, I only saw the results properly ( The camera screen can fool you ! )when I loaded them up. Thank you.

Imagine how hard this is and he makes it look easy. Shutter priority was really the way to go with this!
Frank L Croston.: It is incredible for sure Bonnie. I tried capturing him in different ways but this was the one I thought conveyed his performance. Thank you.
An amazing performance!
Frank L Croston.: Isn't it great Tom...
