photoblog image Sun smoke and snow

Sun smoke and snow

Taken on the Schultz pass, a forest road that weaves through the San Francisco peaks, a spectacular drive, especially in the snow, though I doubted my wisdom of taking it a few times on the way.

The smoke was from a burning of piles of timber collected after an earlier prescribed burn.

I've never seen a scene like that! Amazing that the camera could take it all in....gorgeous!
Frank L Croston.: I've been lucky enough to come across a few burns in the sun, but not with snow as well! It was difficult to know how to expose for it, so I took a few shots. Thanks, Bonnie.

This picture makes me feel as if I am really there, Frank, but I can't smell the woodsmoke
Frank L Croston.: You would have enjoyed it, Elisabeth, actually, it wasn't too smelly...Thanks.

Good for you! Mind you, I would expect that Elizabeth would be less than impressed if you called to say that you were stuck! I have taken hire cars before over forest roads and have had to turn back before now when the graunching from underneath got too much. The rays coming through the trees accentuated by the smoke makes this for me.
Frank L Croston.: Thanks, Alan, I scared myself a couple of times on the trip, most scary was a pick up coming towards me, not slowing down , with just a snow filled ditch on my right! He flew past, just! Then fishtailed on up the road, crazy guy!

Cool effect. It does seem incongruous but snowy season is a good time to burn. I am thinking of doing some myself.
Frank L Croston.: Thanks, Mary, it does make sense.
love the light filtering through the smoke, Frank. terrific mood.
